Description
The apple tree is a deciduous tree, typically 2–4.5 m (6–15 ft) tall in cultivation and up to 9 m (30 ft) tall in the wild. When planting, the size, shape and density of the branch is determined by the choice of base and pruning method. The leaves are alternately arranged in a simple oval shape, dark green in color with a toothed border and a slightly downy underside.[6]
Apple blossoms
The flowers are produced in the spring at the same time as the leaves bud, and are produced on thorns and some long branches. The flowers are 3–4 cm (1–1⁄2+1–in) white with a fading pink, five-petalled, with an inflorescence consisting of a 4–6-flowered raceme. The central flower of the inflorescence is called "king blossom". It opens first and can produce a larger fruit.[6][7]
The fruit is a tree that matures in late summer or fall and cultivars come in a wide range of sizes. Commercial growers aim to produce apples 7 to 8.5 cm (3⁄4+2 to 1⁄4+3 in) in diameter due to market preference. Some consumers, particularly in Japan, prefer larger apples, while apples less than 5.5 cm (1⁄4+2 in) are usually used for juicing and have little market value.
