Description
Sodium sulfide is a crystalline substance with a pronounced hygroscopicity, colorless or having a weak color, readily soluble in ethanol and water. It is characterized by the formation of crystalline hydrates, a highly alkaline environment of solutions. Sodium sulfide refers to anoxic salts, has high photosensitivity and its oxidation in air is slow. When melting, the substance does not decompose, it is resistant to high temperatures.
Sodium sulfide is a reducing agent, that attaches sulfur atoms and participates in ion exchange reactions. Its density is 1.856 g/cm³ and melts at 1176°C. To obtain sodium sulfides, the method of reducing anhydrous sodium sulfide with coal is used. The mixture is placed in rotary shaft kilns, the temperature values of which reach 800-1000°C.
